October is observed in the Philippines as National Peasant Month, culminating on October 21, Peasant Day. Landlessness, rural poverty, land grabbing, and the absence of genuine agrarian reform remain deeply rooted problems confronting Filipino peasants. Peasant organizations continue to mark October as a month of struggle for land, food, justice, and the rights of rural communities.
Agriculture remains one of the most vulnerable sectors in the Philippines, suffering from government neglect, calamities, corruption, and dependence on agricultural imports and exports that continue to cause losses and deepen the hardships of Filipino farmers. Peasant leaders are also relentlessly attacked by the state.
Instead of heeding the call for genuine agrarian reform, the government continues to open our lands to foreign investors, primarily from the US. Recent cases, such as the 1,600-hectare Pax Silica project, threaten to displace farmers and Indigenous peoples, while the state continues to serve as a tool for expanding the power of landlords and foreign capital.
Join us in our webinar, “The State of Filipino Peasants Under the Marcos Regime,” as we discuss how US imperialist control and local landlords continue to oppress Filipino farmers – and how we can build solidarity with the Filipino people.
