Farmers form the backbone of our economy and society: they provide the very food on our tables — and yet, our country’s farmers suffer the most cruel forms of injustice and human rights violations as landlessness persists and the killings of farmers continue unabated.

Under the anti-farmer and fascist regime of Rodrigo Duterte, Karapatan has documented the killings of 202 peasants from July 2016 until August 2020 as part of the government’s bloody and ruthless counterinsurgency operations in the countryside.

Many of them have been killed and branded as “terrorists” simply for asserting their right to till their own land — and many more continue to die through bullets
