Justice for Tumandok Massacre

Justice for Tumandok Massacre

TUMANDUK is an organization of the Tumaduk tribe resisting the construction of the Jalaur  River Multipurpose Project – Stage II (JRMP II) in Calinog, Iloilo. The Tumandoks are being forced to accept P50,000 per hectare for those holding a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title, and lesser amounts for those without a title. Tumanduk farmers in Alibunan, Agcalaga, Sumuroy, and Barangan villages in Calinog, Iloilo are constantly threatened with the construction of the P11.2-billion mega dam. Their persistent resistance has delayed for several years the construction of the mega dam.

The Tumandok people are victims of non-stop militarization in Panay region. In April 2019, soldiers of 61st IBPA forcibly entered the house of Rodolfo Diaz Sr, 70, in Barangay Masaroy, Calinog, Iloilo. Diaz and his family are known as active members of TUMANDUK. The soldiers accosted Rodolfo’s son, Remy Diaz, and made him wear clothes usually seen worn by members of the New People’s Army. The soldiers also forced Remy to carry a gun and photographed him against his will. After the raid, the soldiers announced that they recovered a .38 revolver and documents inside the house. The soldiers later announced in a media interview that an armed encounter happened between soldiers and members of the NPA in Brgy. Masaroy
